Abstract:
Historic Building Record of constituent buildings of the former Ironbridge Power Station, Buildwas Road, Ironbridge, Shropshire TF8 7BL. Recording covered surviving elements of Ironbridge 'A' Station (pump house and road bridge), erected between 1929 and 1930, together with the essentially complete group of buildings associated with the Ironbridge 'B' Station, built between 1962-1969 as a 1,000MW 'super-station', part of CEGB's 500MW programme. The Station ceased operation in 2015 under the terms of the EU's 'Large Combustion Plant Directive' (LCPD) of 2001. All constituent buildings of the plant were inspected and are described (variously to 'Level 2' and 'Level 3' as defined by Historic England), cross-referenced to a comprehensive photographic record and illustrated with copies of original design drawings/diagrams and early photographs as appropriate. Further, a review of the readily available archival sources, at the Shropshire County Archives, the Ironbridge Gorge Museum and on-site at the power station itself, allowed for a context, both historical and technical, to be established in which to interpret the form and function of the site and its component parts. The programme of HBR allowed for a detailed study and record of the buildings, their construction, operation and general developmental history to be made, so far as possible from a non-intrusive survey, in accordance with para. 128 of NPPF and in line with the aims and objectives of the project as outlined in a 'Specification for Building Recording' and 'Method Statement', both reviewed and approved by Shropshire Council and Historic England in advance of work.
