Abstract:
In July 2014 Britannia Archaeology Ltd (BA) undertook an archaeological trial trench evaluation on land at North Fen Farm, Chittering Drove, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire (NGR: TL 5170 7060) to comply with planning permission for the construction of a 20MW solar farm. The works comprised the excavation of 10 trial trenches and five test pits measuring 2.00 x 2.00m. The workfocused on the routes of cable trenches supplemented by a light-touch cross transect of widely spaced test pits to gauge the depth of the soil sequence The evaluation yielded significant results with the discovery of a rare early Bronze Age ad hoc timber track way along the western edge of the site in Trench 1. This is a substantial and important contribution to the local archaeological record. The trackway was poorly preserved with a low preservation horizon leaving mainly the basal bark of the composite timbers, however this proved sufficient to identify and carry out a basic assessment of the structure, including AMS C14 dating. Two fragments of early 1st to early 2nd century AD Romano-British pottery were recovered from a desiccated peat layer above the trackway. The preservation conditions across the rest of site were poor due to post-medieval agricultural activity, however the trackway survived its location thanks only to a layer of hard standing above it which has prevented ploughing and soil erosion. The remaining trenches and test pits show that the potential of surviving archaeological features in the main field to the east is extremely low.
