Abstract:
An archaeological desk-base assessment and landscape survey was undertaken on behalf of the Countryside Service of Worcestershire County Council at Hartlebury Common, Hartlebury, Worcestershire (NGR SO 8230 7230; HER ref WSM 32332). The historic and natural landscape of the Common is largely unique in Worcestershire. Once part of a much larger area of medieval common land, there is no indication that the site has been managed for arable cultivation at any point in its history. This distinctive landscape has been formed as a consequence of clearly identifiable alternative land-use activities. Centuries of intensive grazing and the piecemeal quarrying of sand and gravel have had a considerable impact not only on the broad physical character of the Common but also on the survival of archaeological features and materials dating to the early prehistoric period. It is the intention of Worcestershire County Council to undertake a phase of targeted restoration and management of the heathland in order to reverse the gradual loss of heath following the decline in grazing. Sensitive natural and historic environmental issues have been considered within the management plan. To this end, the survey has not only attempted to map historic features on the Common, but has also provided the core data to enable the provision of specific management advice towards the enhancement and preservation of each distinctive group of monuments. This will be integrated into the strategic management plan, and will hopefully ensure the unique character of Hartlebury Common can be enjoyed as a local historic resource well into the future.
