Abstract:
In response to a planning condition on the construction of extensions and alterations to the existing property of Fourways, Mill End, Standon, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owner to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. It was considered that the present investigation had the potential to contribute to a greater understanding of the origins and development of Standon, particularly with association to the listed late medieval building of Town End Farmhouse, on whose former ground the site is located. The monitoring programme on the present project was divided into three principal areas, which included an extension at the rear of the property, a new porch and a drainage run. Groundwork included ground reduction and footing trenches. The excavation revealed a large quantity of modern overburden from the construction of the existing 1970's house spread across the site. However, two features were observed. A compacted chalk surface representing a possible Post-medieval agricultural or building surface was revealed within the area of the new extension to the south of the property. An un-mortared flint cobbled wall foundation was revealed within the area of the new porch to the north of the property. No features, finds or deposits dating from earlier than the Post Medieval period were encountered during this project.
