Abstract:
This report describes the results of an archaeological watching brief conducted during the demolition of a 19th century garden wall and kennel attached to Maghull Manor. The manor house was constructed in the 18th century as a replacement for the original dwelling which probably lay to the north-east within the bounds of a moat thought to date to the medieval period. The watching brief found that the garden wall was constructed first with the kennels being butted against them. It had crossed the line of and east-west ditch which was probably an internal boundary and would have drained into the main moat. The ditch may have been open when the wall was constructed because an arch was set within the foundations. The ditch was then filled in and the kennels built against the wall. Other than 19th century ceramics the only significant artefact was a section of moulded sandstone masonry from a door or window frame which was probably from the precursor to the present manor house.
