Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of an area proposed for road improvements identified that it was crossed by earthworks relating to the Surrey Iron Railway. These remains constituted a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County no. 123. A possible barrow site also lay within the proposal area. Further remains of the railway, comprising several iron rails laid on stone sleepers, lay to the south, whilst a Roman coin and two Neolithic maceheads, one unfinished, had been found in the vicinity. During a walkover survey of the site, it was noted that some areas appeared to have been disturbed due to landscaping and other activity. It was concluded that parts of the site had an archaeological potential; evaluation of some areas by trial trenching, and a watching brief during works in other areas, were recommended. [AIP] |
