Abstract:
An intermittent archaeological watching brief was maintained along the route of a water main replacement through Bridge cum Church Street, Deeping St James. Much of the pipeline route was characterised by widespread areas of disturbance associated with the later post-medieval and modern periods: early deposit sequences were frequently disturbed by modern road cuts and further disturbance occasioned by now redundant service trenches. However, significant archaeolological remains were exposed in five areas. Here the nature of the post-medieval road was determined; the remains of a stone building and charnel pit found; and most importantly, the first evidence for late Saxon occupations in the area was identified.
