A desk-based study, supported by geophysical survey, to assess the archaeological potential of land proposed for mineral extraction on the south side of North Kelsey Road, identified that the site lay within an area of archaeological interest, with sites of prehistoric and Roman date being particularly numerous. Several cropmarks sites of unknown date were identified locallly. However, within the site boundary only a scatter of flints had previously been recorded as being recovered on the County Sites and Monuments Record. Walkover survey of the site identified extensive rabbit burrowing, and 19th and 20th century pottery was recovered from the spoil generated by this burrowing. Some unworked local flint was found near to the southern site boundary. Geophysical survey identified one possible anomaly of archaeological interest adjacent to the souther boundary of the site. This response may have represented a hearth or kiln. [Au(adp)] | |||||||||||
