Abstract:
A watching brief was maintained during the construction of and office, store and toilets in the west end of the South Aisle of St Wulfram's Church and during the excavation of an associated sewer trench from the west end of the church to the mains sewer in Swinegate. The internal works indicated that the part of the church affected had already been disturbed by 18th-19th century vaults. Two ditches were identified in the sewer trench outside the church, although it was not clear whether they represented a former churchyard boundary east of the present gates or were of much earlier date. No direct evidence of the market thought to lie in front of the church was identified and only two fragments of pottery of 9th to 10th century date were recovered. [AIP]
