Abstract: |
A fluxgate gradiometer survey prior to the construction of a roundabout, identified significant magnetic variation across the site, possibly related to human activity. Whilst some of the anomalies could be directly associated with modern activities, others appeared to reflect the presence of sub-surface archaeological features. Scatters of discrete anomalies across the site attested to the possible presence of ferrous and brick/tile debris, but some might be the result of natural processes. A watching brief of six test pits took place during the excavation, primarily to identify services. The findings of the watching brief were ambiguous, as it had not been possible to interpret deposits with confidence, due to a total absence of diagnostic artefactual remains. One feature, a modern service had been identified by the geophysics, but the majority of the layers that were exposed were associated with the raised embankment on which the modern road rested.
