Abstract:
Sixty-nine evaluation trenches were excavated. The earliest identifiable activity on the site proved to be of Bronze or Iron Age date and comprised a wide but shallow ditch on a north-west to south-east orientation, located towards the western edge of the site. Activity of Romano-British date proved the most extensive with some 16 trenches containing remains of Roman date. Much of the activity of this period appeared to be related to an extramural settlement, to the east of the walled town of Corinium and centred on Trenches 1-8 in the far north of the subject site. Here quantities of Roman building material, potential masonry foundations and associated pottery attested to the existence of a masonry building in the immediate vicinity. Further settlement may have been evidenced in Trench 61 to the south-east of the study area but this was from conclusive. The remaining activity of Roman date observed during the fieldwork comprised a combination of agricultural features such as ditches and quarrying. The results of the fieldwork were notable in failing to produce any concrete evidence of activity date to the Saxon, Medieval and post-medieval periods. [Au(abr)]
