Abstract:
The evaluation indicated that the predominant archaeological remains within the development area related to both Roman occupation and 18th or 19th century industrial and residential use of this area of Castlefield. The distribution of these remains also indicated that fairly substantial swathes of surviving Roman archaeology were found close to the corner of Beaufort Street and former Ivy Street, along the southern side of Bridgewater Street and beneath the Great Northern Railway and Cheshire Lines Committee viaducts. The remains include portions of the Roman fort and civil settlement, or vicus, and significantly these expand the known area of the Roman settlement south-eastwards and provide new chronological evidence for the construction of the fort defences.
