Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation, utilising fieldwalking, auger, geophysical surveys and test-trenching, was undertaken on a series of known archaeological sites along the proposed route of the Derby Southern Bypass. Three Scheduled Ancient Monuments, comprising Swarkestone Lowes barrow cemetery and enclosures, Aston Cursus complex and Lockington Hemington Barrow Cemetery, were investigated. Sites of regional importance investigated included Buckford Bridge pit-alignment, Stenson Farm ring-ditches and an area of prehistoric and Romano-British settlement at Elvaston and Foxcovert Farm.
