Abstract:
A study of the deserted medieval village of Soldberge, 5km to the south of Northallerton was undertaken by Alison Clarke to augment the information in the Sites and Monuments Record, as little was known of its history. The different strands of evidence consulted were documentary, map and published sources, aerial photographic evidence, a detailed survey of the remaining earthworks and a standing building survey of North Sowber Hill Farm. The history of the settlement from its pre-Domesday inception to its surviving elements was traced, and an outline of its physical dimensions was gained. Unfortunately questions concerning whether there had been a shift in the location of the settlement, and when and why the settlement was abandoned, could not be answered with any certainty. [AIP]
