Abstract: |
In August 2012 an archaeological desk-based assessment of two plots of land at the Combermere Barracks, Windsor showed that the site had been in agricultural use until construction of the barracks between 1800-1804. The study areas were part of the parade/drill ground until the southernmost plot had a married quarters accommodation block constructed on it in the late 1860s. Other structures were also constructed on this plot which is currently in use as a car-park. The northern plot was built over in the 1960s apart from a garden area which still contains the footings of one of the original barrack buildings, possibly an entrance gatehouse, in use as a magazine by the 1860s. |
