Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology Ltd were commissioned by Hart Builders (Edinburgh) Ltd to undertake a trial trench evaluation of land 20 metres east of 20 Newhaven Place, Edinburgh in response to a condition placed on the planning application (15/02317/AMC). A 10% evaluation was intended to ascertain the extent, nature and condition of any archaeological remains. Due to the depth and unstable nature of made ground deposits encountered on site this was reduced to a series of 6 trial holes. These trial holes were placed in order to achieve even coverage across the site. The results of the trial hole evaluation revealed clean marine sands at depths of between 2.00m and 3.20m below the current ground level. These were overlain by 20th century made ground deposits predominantly comprising of boulders, rubble, bricks and demolition material. The remains of concrete foundations and utility trenches related to recent buildings were found across much of the site. No remains of archaeological significance were encountered. |
