Abstract:
This report describes the results of an archaeological trial trench evaluation carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology on land to the rear of 10A Rosemary Road, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire (NGR TL 4977 6522) between the 22nd and the 28th March 2017. The earliest activity was evidenced by a pit containing material dating to the Roman period. There were also a number of undated ditches that were cut by Late Saxon features, indicating an earlier phase of activity. The principal result of the evaluation was the recording of a series of Late Saxon to medieval settlement-related features including boundary and drainage ditches, possible structural related features and a possible oven/hearth. These features were associated with moderate quantities of finds including animal bone, pottery of predominantly Late Saxon to early medieval (10th- to 12th-century) date and a concentrated amount of cereal grains. The finds indicate both domestic and agricultural activity, in keeping with backyard activity on the periphery of the Saxon and medieval village of Waterbeach. There has been little to no other archaeological evidence of settlement dating to this period in Waterbeach. The settlement was abandoned on the site in the 14th century and the latest phase of activity on the site was two post medieval rubbish pits.
