Abstract:
In November 2005, archaeological excavations were undertaken by Worcestershire Historic Environment and Archaeology Service at Stourport Canal Basins (NGR SO 8100 7100; WSM 34767), Worcestershire, on behalf of British Waterways, who received a Heritage Lottery Fund award allowing them to carry out restoration works at the site. The project was designed to meet three particular areas of British Waterways' scheme design. First, to run a community-based field project staffed by local volunteers, and supported by professional archaeologists. Second, to engage with the local community during fieldwork, and third, to examine specific elements of the Basins, in order to inform a strategy for re-landscaping the Tontine Gardens, and for representing the site of a tollhouse as a historic feature. The excavations have shed new light on Stourport and its unique position in the pioneering days of the Canal Age. The rediscovery of the tollhouse and the identification of three phases of garden design, in front of the Tontine building, have produced useful information to assist British Waterways with their plans to display authentic features at the Basins. The work has also demonstrated that the local community desire future opportunities to explore the town's rich heritage.
