Official report on the discoveries of Roman remains at Chester, during the first repairs to the North Wall, in 1887
I Matthews Jones
1 - 10
Great care was taken to recover and record Roman sculptured stones during repair work to the city wall at Chester, fifty paces from the west angle of the Phoenix Tower, at the site of a breach made during the 1645-6 siege of the city. Fifty-eight stones were recovered in total, all from the sub-structure of the wall. An appendix gives a brief description of each and indicates the course from which it was recovered. LD
The Roman inscriptions discovered at Chester, during the first repairs to the North Wall, in 1887
William T Thompson Watkin
11 - 24
A short introduction notes how Roman architectural stone and tombstones have at various times been built into the city walls at Chester, accounting for the lack of such stones to be found elsewhere within the city. Inscriptions from some of the stones recovered during repair works to the walls in 1887 (see previous article in this volume) are transcribed and discussed. LD
Notes on a sculptured stone recently found in the North Wall of the city of Chester
Walter de Gray Birch
25 - 39
Concerns one of a number of sculptured stones recovered during repair works to the city walls at Chester [see article on pp1-10 of this volume]. Although the other recovered stones are all considered to be Roman, the stone discussed here is thought by some to be of the medieval period. The author quotes some of the arguments for a post-Roman date and explains why he himself believes the stone to be Roman. The date of the stone, found many feet below the ground, has implications for the earliest possible construction date of the wall itself. LD

The inscribed Roman stones recently found at Chester, during the second series of repairs to the North Wall
Walter de Gray Birch
98 - 131
Article describing and illustrating a number of Roman carved stones, almost all with inscriptions, recovered during repairs to the city walls at Chester. The author urges further investigation of the walls with the purpose of identifying and retrieving further sculptured stones. A Greek statuette is mentioned in relation to a stone of disputed date discussed in another article in this volume (pp25-39); the statuette includes clothing details similar to those on one of the figures on the stone.
