Abstract: |
Two test pits were excavated by Wildfire Television Ltd. as part of the Time Team Big Dig at Zinch House, a building with 15th or 16th century origins. One was intended to locate an outbuilding shown on a Tithe Map of 1840 and the other to establish the context of finds recovered by the landowner from a neighbouring paddock. The test pits showed that over one metre of hill wash, containing part of an Iron Age loom weight and much medieval pottery, covered the site. Geophysical survey and further excavation produced evidence of medieval agricultural and settlement activity in the form of slots and shallow pits, sealed by the hill wash, from which 11th - 14th century pottery, two whetsones and a variety of food remains were recovered. Post-medieval deposits, including a building with a cobbled floor were also recorded. None of these appears to match buildings shown on the Tithe Map, but they could represent remnants of outbuildings and yard surfaces associated with Zinch House |
