Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the construction of a gas pipeline between Heathfield and Landford Bridge, near Taunton. Part of the pipeline route passed not far to the north of a Scheduled Ancient Monument, an Iron Age hillfort known as Norton Camp. A walkover only was undertaken along the western section of the pipeline route, which was completed before the start of archaeological work. A full watching brief was maintained during stripping and excavation of the remainder of the route. Few archaeological features were identified. An undated gully was recorded to the north of Norton Camp hillfort. Modern terracing, two metalled (tarmac) tracks and a paved (concrete block) surface were noted further ro the east. These features are probably associated with a Second World War prisoner of war camp. |
