Abstract: |
Two trial trenches were excavated within the tower of the church in advance of work to install kitchen and toilet facilites. A simultaneous watching brief was maintained on drainage trenches excavated through the churchyard. An earlier floor constructed of stone slabs and tiles was uncovered beneath the present floor of the tower. The earlier floor sealed a shallow, flat based cut feature of unknown function. This feature was cut through the upper part of soil layers that contained several sherds of pottery dated to the 12th -13th century. The soil layers were built up against and lay above two areas of masonry. One of these comprised the probable former west end of the nave. The other block of masonry, situated close to the north wall of the tower, may have been foundations for either the tower or perhaps a buttress on the northwest corner of the nave that predated the tower. Monitoring of the drainage trenches, around the western perimeter of the churchyard, produced no signicant results. |
