Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology to fulfil a planning condition associated with the redevelopment of the site for office use. No significant archaeological deposits or artefacts were found. The single evaluation trench excavated showed the site to have been raised and levelled by a 2.16m thick sequence of modern demolition debris, industrial waste and redposited alluvial clays. Plastic found at the base of the sequence indicated that it was of recent date, most probably laid down before the construction of the existing car park. Beneath the made ground, topsoil sealed alluvial deposits thought to be associated with watercress beds shown on historic maps to have been in use until the end of the 19th century. The alluvial deposits sealed an earlier topsoil which overlay, in its turn, earlier alluvial clay thought to result from flooding by the River Wandle. Coarse sandy fluvial gravel ws recorded at the base of the trench. It was concluded that the site has been waterlogged, either as natural wetland and marshland or for use as watercress beds, water meadows etc throughout most of its history.
