Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology, following a desk-based assessment, in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the goods yard. Six trenches were excavated by machine in accordance with the project design, three of which were located to investigate the site of a canal basin known from the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map (1886). A seventh trench was subsequently opened to record more of the canal basin. All of the trenches were placed to avoid known areas of contamination and brickearth quarrying. The canal basin was encountered in two of the targeted trenches, but not in the third, suggesting either that it did not extend as far west as was shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map or that it lay to the north of its extrapolated location. The canal basin was infilled with industrial waste deposits and redeposited gravel. Undisturbed natural brickearth was encountered at varying depths in all trenches except Trench 7. No archaeological features or artefacts pre-dating the late post-medieval period were recorded. |
