Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology on a site for which outline planning permission for residential development has been granted. The area either side of Houghton Road has previously produced many findspots of prehistoric worked flint and, in the mid-19th century, evidence of an early Romano-British cremation cemetery was found to the south-west of the current site. A preliminary geophysical survey of the site was undertaken, the results which identified a number of anomalies and were used to locate the evaluation trenches, of which there were 22 in total. The majority of the trenches contained no archaeological remains. Two shallow undated ditches were identified in three trenches (Trenches 14, 21 and 23) and a series of burnt tree throws was noted (Trenches 18, 20 and 21). Extensive evidence of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow, broadly running east to west, was found across the site. One trench (Trench 3) was found to contain significant archaeology, in the form of a pit containing an undated, unurned cremation burial, which was truncated by the medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow. Additional trenching radiating from this feature did not identify any further archaeological features in the immediate area.
