Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation and watching brief at the site, for which redevelopment proposals have been approved. The redevelopment will result in the demolition of the rear of the existing buildings and extension of the basements across the whole site. The evaluation comprised the hand-excavation of two test pits and the watching brief allowed observation of three geotechnical test pits excavated by the site contractor (a fourth could not be excavated because of the presence of services). The earliest deposits recorded in both archaeological test pits were waterlogged sandy clay silts containing 19th-century pottery, brick fragments, animal bone and oyster shell. Similar deposits were recorded in geotechnical test pit 1. These may represent infilled water features, a number of which are shown near the on early maps and may have been associated with a tile kiln shown on an 18th-century map. The deposits were recorded to a depth of 18.20m aOD and almost certainly pre-date the construction of the three properties built on the site in the 19th century. Modern rubble c.3m deep was noted in geotechnical test pit 3. No evidence was found of the yard and mews buildings shown on the northern edge of the site on Paul Potter's map of 1879.
