Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out test pitting to determine whether the site had ever been used as a cemetery. Research for a desk-based assessment had indicated that the land was bought, c1930, for use as a burial ground to serve the Baptist Chapel located some 400m to the west. However, no further documentary or cartographic evidence was found which confirmed that it was ever so used. Three test pits were excavated in the only accessible area, but all were found to contain made ground to a depth of c2m. No archaeological features, including burials, were seen, nor were any finds recovered. |
