Abstract:
Transport for London (TfL) has been tasked with implementing the Cycle Hire Scheme within central London by May 2010. Approximately 10, 200 docking points at around 400 sites at a density of approximately nine sites per square kilometre are required. For sites it was deemed necessary Archaeological Impact Assessments have been completed to identify which sites would require further archaeological investigation. A generic Written Scheme of Investigation was written for all sites requiring further archaeological investigation. Docking station 02/610229 was deemed to need further archaeological investigation. This investigation consisted of an archaeological watching brief during the goundworks for the docking station. Initially 3 trail pits were excavated along the length of the docking station footprint. No archaeological features were observed within these trial pits. The trail pits showed that mad ground went to the maximum depth of the docking station foundations and went along the whole footprint of the docking station so further archaeological monitoring of the groundworks was not deemed necessary.
