Abstract:
Transport for London (TfL) has been tasked with implementing the Cycle Hire Scheme within central London by summer 2010. Approximately 10, 200 docking points at around 400 sites at a density of approximately nine sites per square kilometre are required. An Archaeological Impact Assessments was carried out, for sites where it was deemed necessary, to identify if further archaeological investigation would be required. A generic Written Scheme of Investigation was written for all sites requiring further archaeological investigation. Docking station 01/615100 was deemed to need further archaeological investigation. This investigation consisted of an archaeological watching brief during the goundworks for the docking station. Initially 1 trail pit was excavated. No archaeological features were observed within the trial pit. A 20th century tarmac road surface was observed at 0.43m below ground level. It was apparent that the pavement where the docking station was being installed had been constructed on top of a road surface. Excavations for the docking station would not go below the old road surface so further archaeological monitoring of the groundworks was deemed unnecessary.
