Abstract: |
In 2009 Historic Environment Projects Cornwall Council were commissioned by the National Trust to survey their properties around St Agnes Beacon. The project included historical research, archaeological assessment, ecological survey, structural assessment, photographic and drawn building recording, together with management recommendations. St Agnes Beacon is a prominent landmark, its crest siting Bronze Age cairns, Tubby's Head sites a cliff castle and there was a medieval chapel and holy well at Chapel Porth. This landscape had long been downland. Mining began during the early post-medieval period, followed by downland enclosure, many smallholders being tinners. Tin and copper mines developed from coastal outcrops, in particular at Wheal Coates, Great Charlotte and Charlotte United. The stream in Chapel Combe became an important resource for tin dressing and quarries supplied candle clay for miners. At Wheal Coates the field remains demonstrate the evolution of mining over five centuries. The Beacon also sited a fire beacon, an eighteenth-century summerhouse, a coastguard lookout and a WWII radar station; Charlotte Moor sited the test range for the Holman Projector, and was used by the US Army for a D Day embarkation camp. Within these areas of coastal heathland, archaeological features spanning 4000 years are well-preserved, though scrub management is needed in some areas to ensure that this remains the case. The report includes a range of management proposals covering vegetation management, access improvements and the provision of interpretation. Structures within the project area have been conserved during the last five decades, and require only minimal attention. |
