Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was carried out on land at Court 19, Rear of 81, Market Street, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire (NGR: SK 3591 1682). The work was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for a new dwelling at the site, which lies in the centre of Ashby in an area once occupied by medieval burgage plots. The site was previously a small garden. A large amount of service pipes and cables were encountered along the line of the proposed foundations and these had to be diverted during the excavations. The removal of the flower beds that once occupied the site revealed a large amount of sandy topsoil. The foundation trench was excavated by hand around the services and revealed the aforementioned topsoil and made up ground containing a large amount of modern brick. As the area was so disturbed and also contained a further two manholes and the footings of two walls at each side of the site it was not deemed necessary to make any more visits to the site. The archive for this project will be deposited with Leicestershire Museums Service with accession number X.A158.2013.
