Abstract:
Pengersick Castle is both Listed and Scheduled. Proposals for renovation works resulted in applications for statutory consents. Test pits dug for investigation of the drains revealed that the area between the castle tower and the southern site entrance had been greatly disturbed in the later 20th century during installation of earlier drains. Test pits inside the tower revealed that the floors were relaid in the later 20th century. Older archaeological deposits probably survive at depth. Removal of tree stumps revealed the sequence of development of the garden terraces. Earlier garden soil was revealed below the upper terrace. A remnant of granite paving was revealed in the lower terrace, likely to be part of a former path leading to the hall range of the castle. Removal of finishes inside the tower revealed details of construction including dressed masonry and putlog holes for the original scaffolding. Although floor planking has been replaced the principal supporting beams mostly survive. The upper tower rooms were all designed to be residential and have fireplaces in different walls so that flues emerge within the central parapet merlons. The second floor room has evidence of panelling, probably where paintings were recorded by William Borlase in the 18th century. Removal of plaster in the 1920s annexe showed how the original hall wing related to the tower. Although physically a separate construction, an original linking doorway at first floor level in the tower indicates that the hall wing was designed as an integral part of the original castle complex.
