Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out by SWARCH in the gardens and ground floor of the Walronds, Fore Street, Cullompton, Devon. This work was carried out on behalf of The Walronds Preservation Trust during all groundworks associated with the restoration of the building and gardens. In addition to the work undertaken by SWARCH, Keystone Historic Building Consultants monitored the works on the upstanding building; the results of which will be produced elsewhere (Keystone forthcoming). This monitoring revealed a series of features and deposits relating to the present 17th century house, in addition to a small number of features which hint at the existence of a medieval building/structure having stood under at least part of the present building range, the partial footprint of which may have been re-used/restored to form the rear service room to the southwest. The groundworks also suggest that the main stair is not part of the original build, but dates to immediately after. |
