Abstract:
During ground reduction of the overburden, (27.23m OD maximum) to the formation level of 24.50m OD, the deposits consisted of clayey dumps that contained rubble that overlay the remains of a red brick 19th century wall in the northwestern quadrant of the site. The wall was visible in section and stood 0.73m high and measured 0.90m wide. The top of the wall was recorded as surviving to 25.23m OD. Further traces of it were seen in the form of a red crushed brick spread continuing in a south easterly direction across the site at formation level. It is likely that this represents the remains of the boundary wall between King's Cross and St Pancras Stations. The foundation and canopy excavations revealed natural orangey buff clay (black where it had been contaminated with hydrocarbons) with gravel at approximately 1m below formation level at a height of 24.20m OD. This was overlain by a variable thickness (0.25-0.50m) of reddish silty clay with crushed bricks surviving between 24.45m OD and 24.70m OD. Sealing this sequence was demolition material,0.30m thick (25.00m OD) overlain by the piling mat, the top of which lay at 25.50m OD. No other archaeological remains were encountered on the site.
