Abstract: |
Work continued from 2008. Monitoring of groundworks revealed natural gravelly clay beneath make-up layers. Discolouration of these deposits was probably caused by fuel leakage from the petrol station which occupied the site until the 1970s. Above this were a rubble make-up layer overlain by garden soil, both cut by modern pipes and service trenches and by the walls of the 20th-century pump room. Within a drainage trench on Rushcroft Road a layer of loose brick rubble make-up was overlain by timber setts. These were used as a bedding within the 19th-century road surface, probably to reduce the noise from horse-drawn vehicles. Modern tarmac sealed these remains. |
