Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology between September and October 2014 during building work at Kings Cottage, Gittisham, Devon. The site lies on the eastern edge of the village of Gittisham. Kings Cottage is a grade II listed building. The layout perpetuates that of an earlier house which was first constructed as a three room and cross-passage house in the late 16th or early 17th century, with the lower end remodelled and extended in the late 17th century. Because of the late medieval date of the building it was possible that the construction of the underfloor heating had the potential to expose archaeological features - such as pits, ditches or gullies - and artefacts associated with the early building surviving beneath the existing floors. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the removal of existing concrete floor surfaces throughout the ground floor, The initial ground reduction for the new under floor heating extended to a depth of 0.35-0.4m. The removal of concrete floors exposed no deposits, features or dating evidence indicative of archaeological activity. The work uncovered a simple sequence consisting of a 0.05-0.1m thick concrete floor located above natural subsoil. This consisted of a mid reddish-brown clay natural subsoil with frequent shillet inclusions.
