Abstract:
AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Wm Hamilton and Sons Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation on a proposed development site at Dovesdale Farm, Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire (NS 77577). The investigated area was a greenfield site covering 52,000 m2 and has outline planning consent (Planning Application No. Hm/10/0345). An 8% (6,800 m2) archaeological evaluation of this area amounting to 3,400 linear metres was required by West of Scotland Archaeology Service. However, the presence of a high pressure gas main running across the east of the site reduced the available investigation area to 3,510 m2. A curtailed 8% evaluation consisting of 20 trenches covering a total of 1920 linear metres was therefore undertaken. The evaluation trenching did not uncover any significant archaeological features. A simple stratigraphic sequence of thin topsoil over clay sub-soils was noted. Areas of poor drainage and the presence of numerous field drains suggest that historically, the ground has been relatively poorly drained. In summary, no significant archaeological finds or features were encountered during the evaluation and it is concluded that this reflects historic land-use being restricted to agriculture rather than settlement.
