Abstract: |
This is a research project undertaken by SWAAG member, Will Swales, into Commons in the Civil Parish of Grinton near Reeth in Swaledale. It considers Grinton Moor, Harkerside Moor and Whitaside Moor on the south side of the River Swale focusing mainly on grazing rights on Harkerside from 1855 to 2013. The paper presented provides a detailed history of the commons, highlighting the impact of agriculture and the lead mining industry, tenure and land ownership (including reference to the legal background and associated disputes) and the regulation of grazing. It was researched using original documents in North Yorkshire County Record Office, various printed sources together with knowledge and recollections gathered through personal conversations with the local graziers. |
