Abstract: |
Howden House is Category B Listed built in c.1770. The RCAHMS record mentions the potential presence of an earlier tower. The existing ground and first floors both have a wall that is in excess of 2.5m thick and these may represent original re-used remains of an earlier 15th-16th-century tower. The historic building survey showed a number of major developmental phases since first constructed. Most of the period features have been removed. The east and west wings are major additions that were constructed shortly after the main core block, with the East Wing being a single storey structure that was heightened at an unknown date. The two-storey West Wing was built in a single phase. Much of the current footprint of the building has not altered radically since the early to mid 19th century. Minor 20th-century additions include electrical switch gear, most of the fireplaces and the concrete staircase in the East Wing. A programme of test-pitting was carried out to investigate the presence of any earlier building remains within the building interior. A wall underlying the wall of the western wing of the house was identified, built directly onto the bedrock. It was unclear whether this was an earlier wall or part of the foundations of the current wall of the house but its slight divergence in alignment from the current wall does suggest it could have been earlier. No earlier floor layers or deposits that could be directly associated with a precursor to Howden House were identified. Gary Savory 2012. |
