Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in November 2012 at Shepherds Lane, Teignmouth, Devon. Sixty five trenches were excavated. Evidence was found for prehistoric activity on the site in the form of a Neolithic or Bronze Age pit and a ditch dating to the Middle Bronze Age. The remains of a multi-phase Roman agricultural enclosure were recorded. The enclosure comprised a concentric series of substantial ditches dating to the 2nd to 4th century AD. Some evidence of possible small-scale contemporary timber structures located internally to the enclosure was identified but a dearth of building materials suggests an absence of significant structures. Evidence for domestic and industrial waste was recovered from a refuse pit in close proximity to the enclosure. Numerous undated linear features were identified which may be associated with the Roman enclosure. Evidence for settlement and further enclosure in the southern part of the site could not be firmly dated but may be prehistoric in origin based on the presence of single flint flakes.
