Abstract:
As a result of a field evaluation, a small number of prehistoric features were identified and an area of some 120 square metres excavated. The features may be the remnant of a building at least 4-5m across, with an arc of discoloured sand possibly indicating the edge of a round/oval structure. Two pits within the possible structure were filled with carbonised material. Environmental analysis suggests that the fills derived from a domestic context with abundant charcoal, grain, burnt bone and some wild food such as hazelnut. The pottery from the pits also appears to be domestic. The lithics include a high proportion of tools. There is also such an abundance of burnt grain in one pit that it is possible that there may have been some type of grain drying 'kiln' nearby. The possibility of a fire-related activity is supported by burnt daub with plank impressions and burnt oak planks lying against the side of one pit. The pit itself showed no evidence of in situ heating and it is probable that the contents of both pits derived from two adjacent hearths. Two radiocarbon dates show that the fill of both pits was contemporary c 3700-3500 cal BC. As there was no stratigraphic link between the pits it is not clear if they or the two hearths were in operation on the same occasion or if they were a year or so apart. J C Murray 2014.
