Abstract:
A programme of archaeological works was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd at 9 West Harbour Road, Granton, comprising a pre-demolition Level 2 building survey on a brick-built building situated within the development boundary followed by a post-demolition trial trenching evaluation. The results of the evaluation led to further excavation being required. A trial trenching evaluation covered 146m2 of the development. The evaluation identified that the foundation courses of earlier buildings survives within the development area. The remains correspond to buildings mapped on the 1896 Ordnance Survey Plan. Only the foundation courses of the walls survive in a fragmentary state and no in situ floor levels or deposits were recorded. The areas mapped as containing no buildings were identified as archaeologically sterile. Further excavation of the identified Smithy took place and this uncovered slightly more of its remains. However it was extremely fragmentary with only the very bases of the foundations surviving. No contemporary deposits were identified and no features that could definitively be associated with the structures functional use as a Smithy were identified. However, it is certain that the some of the features identified were indeed the remains of the Smithy dating to before 1849
