Abstract:
As the result of an archaeological condition on planning consent for the conversion of the existing building at 6 High Street, Welwyn, Herts. the Heritage Network was commissioned to create a record of the building and to undertake archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks. No.6 High Street encompasses two separate narrow buildings (no.6A to the north and no.6 to the south) on the eastern side of the High Street. Cartographic evidence suggests that the western block of 6A is the earliest part of the building but this is contradicted by the structural evidence. This demonstrates that the earliest part the building is formed of the eastern (rear) block of no.6A (Rooms G2 and F2), which may be late 17th or 18th century in date and may originally have been freestanding. The front block may originally have been of two bays, extending across the footprints of both nos.6 and 6A, but it appears to have been bisected by the replacement of no.6 in the mid 19th century. The surviving half of the structure (Rooms G1 and F1) may be 18th century in origin but has been significantly remodelled, probably in the mid-19th century, and no early elements survive. No.6 (Rooms F1 and F2 and S1 and S2) is mid-19th century in date. Monitoring of the underpinning trenches in the front room of no.6A (G1) revealed that the western (front) wall had no discernible footings, while the north wall had brick footings. No evidence for features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance was encountered in the course of the groundworks.
