Abstract: |
Five evaluation trenches were excavated on the site, in the footprint of the proposed basement to the east of the house. Natural deposits of brickearth, bagshot sands and outcrops of clay with gravel were generally reached 0.3m below the ground surface. The natural was shown to slope from east to west across the site: from 125.78m -124.51m OD. The surface of the natural had been heavily truncated, removing any horizontal archaeological layers and leaving only deep cut features. These include two intercutting features in the north part of the site which may have been 19th-century garden features associated with Parkfield House. These were cut by a 19th-century brick-lined well which was located to the south of a functioning, cast iron water pump and may have been a precursor to it. These features and the natural were overlain by modern make up deposits for the ground surface. |
