Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was maintained on the groundworks pertaining to the construction of a new rear extension to an existing residential dwelling. The groundworks consisted of the mechanical ground reduction of an open area which would accommodate a concrete raft foundation. The watching brief identified a simple deposit sequence which consisted of a deep and substantial topsoil/ploughsoil horizon which overlay a natural horizon of glacial sands. This deposit sequence was recorded throughout the monitored area and within four representative sections. Eight sherds of pottery dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries were recovered from the topsoil/ploughsoil horizon. A large number of glacial erratics of various sizes of local Tealby Ironstone were recovered from the natural horizon. Although finds of medieval and post-medieval pottery were recovered from the topsoil/ploughsoil horizon, no archaeological features, deposits or structures which could be associated with the medieval and post-medieval settlements of Tealby was found.
