Abstract:
An archaeological monitoring exercise was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. in response to the planned development of land at Tideway Wharf Industrial Estate, Battersea, London Borough of Wandsworth. The archaeological works involved three areas of investigation Area 1, Area 2 and Area 3. In Area 1 the remains of the Heathwall pumping station and the walls of the associated workers cottages were revealed. These were late 19th to early 20th century in date. Two walls associated with earlier buildings in this part of site, one relating to an earlier Manor House the other to a later warehouse. Two trenches in Area 2 revealed the walls of an historic tidal inlet channel and dock and an earlier wall, possibly relating to a former mill. Area 3 revealed possibly the earliest feature on site, the remnants of a river revetment. Two 19th century walls and the concrete footings and brick walls of a 20th Jam Factory were also observed in this area. River silt deposits were observed in Areas 1 and 3. Natural sands and gravels were observed sloping toward the river.
