Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief and subsequent excavation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology during the redevelopment of the cellarium and adjacent spaces into a new café. The site included the late 14th-century undercroft of the cellarer's range, and what was historically the sub-vault of the misericorde and the kitchen yard. To the north and south the study site was bordered by the 11th century refection and monastic kitchen respectively; to the east by the monastic song school and to the west by Dean's Yard. Remains of a late 10th/early 11th century building were uncovered during the excavation. This had been partially demolished during the construction of the refectory to the north in the late 11th century and by the construction of the passage between the refectory and the monastic kitchen shortly after. Both walls of the passage were partially exposed during the investigation. In the second quarter of the 13th century the passage was demolished and the footing for the west wall reused for the west wall of the misericorde. In addition to these buildings evidence for a 13th century predecessor of the late 14th century cellarium and numerous other more temporary buildings within the kitchen yard was also found. Part of the 12th and 13th century system of lead water pipes supplying the kitchen with water was also uncovered. To the west 11th century land reclamation deposits were recorded. Also seen was evidence for the post-dissolution and later redevelopments of the site, which included the partial demolition of the misericorde.
