Abstract:
Planning consent has been granted for the conversion, alteration, and extension of existing buildings to form a wedding venue at Bassmead (or Basmead) Manor in the Bedfordshire parish of Staploe. The site is set within a moated medieval enclosure (scheduled ancient monument NHLE no. 1012067) and is therefore archaeologically sensitive. Excavation of service trenches on land east of the moated enclosure found undated boundary ditches and a possible eastward extension of the moat. Monitoring of boreholes, demolition works and trial trench excavation was undertaken inside the moated area. Investigations in the south-east corner of the area showed a cobbled surface overlain by a layer of imported clay used to level up this part of the site. Monitoring during the removal of modern foundations in this area showed that the deeper intrusions extended into the underlying geology but that a significant proportion did not extend below the earlier cobbled surface. A trial trench in the north-west quadrant of the island uncovered two intersecting ditches cut into undisturbed subsoil and boulder clay. The lower fill in one of these ditches contained glass and ceramics dated to the 18th or 19th centuries.
