Abstract:
A programme of archaeological evaluation trenching took place on land to the east of Prebend Lane, on the north side of the village of Welton in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire. If exposed, any archaeological deposits or remains were to be assessed and recorded. The proposed development site is situated at the edge of the modern village, outside the historic village core and Conservation Area, but there is evidence for prehistoric and Roman activity in the area, with possible Roman settlement, potentially a villa, directly to the north of the site. A geophysical survey carried out on the site as part of this project observed anomalies suggesting ditches and pits in the south-east corner of the western field (Field 1), with slighter suggestions of similar features elsewhere on the site. 8 trenches (30m x 2m) were excavated across the site. Of these 8, 6 proved to be archaeologically negative (1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8), whilst trenches 5 and 6 (in the south-east corner of the western field) produced fairly substantial archaeological features, which produced pottery that has been dated to the Iron Age.
