Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a desk-based assessment and archaeological evaluation trenching carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) on land at Back Lane, North Molton, Devon in advance of the development of the site for 25 houses and associated infrastructure. Five evaluation trenches revealed a relatively dense concentration of relatively slight archaeological features, most of which are likely to be medieval in date. This is not unexpected given the proximity of the site to the parish church and one of the two principal manorial complexes (The Court House) in the settlement. Iron slag was present at the site and includes material diagnostic of smelting and a deposit of concreted smelting waste in a large pit, which may be the base of a furnace or tapping pit of medieval date. North Molton has long been associated with iron production (i.e. four ironworkers mentioned in Domesday) but this is the first conclusive evidence for iron production - albeit in a minor way - from the settlement and from this part of the Exmoor fringe. |
